The Colors of Africa Crochet Earrings

Whether you are a beginner or an experience crocheter these African inspired colorful earrings is a fun project to make. If you are a beginner you will learn how to make a basic granny square, you will practice how to carry the threads inside the stitches used in tapestry crochet technique, you will learn how to make simple jewelry and last but not least you will learn the colors combination from different culture.
STITCHES USED
ch = chain    
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch

FINISHED SIZE
3 x 3 cm 
MATERIALS
Balinese Cotton Yarn (Substitute with  mercerized cotton)
2 m each of red, orange, and green.  
 Yarn sewing needle, a pair of gold plated earrings, a pair of split rings (optional), a round nose plier, a yarn or tapestry needle, scissor
GAUGE
7 sc = 1 inch
HOOK: C/2.75 mm
Using red and leaving a 15 cm tail, make a magic ring, 1ch.
 *(Sc, ch) repeat 3 x, join with sl st, cut off red.
Using green join into any corner sp,  1ch. 

1sc in same ch-1 sp, 1ch, skip next sc, *(1sc, 1ch, 1sc, 1ch) repeat 2 x, 
join with sl st, fasten off.

Using orange join into any corner sp, 1ch. Carry the yarn not in use inside the stitches to hide them to avoid weaving in a lot of ends, crochet tightly.
1sc in same ch-1 sp, 1ch, skip next sc, 1sc, 1ch, skip next sc * [(1sc, 1ch, 1sc), 1ch, skip next sc, 1sc, 1ch, skip next sc)] repeat 2 x, join with sl st, fasten off.
Using green join into any corner sp, 1ch. 
1sc in same ch-1 sp, 1ch, skip next sc, 1sc, 1ch, skip next sc, 1sc, 1ch, skip next sc  * [(1sc, 1ch, 1sc), 1ch, skip next sc, 1sc, 1ch, skip next sc, 1sc, 1ch, skip next sc )] repeat 2 x, join with sl st, fasten off.
Cut off green leaving 15 cm tail, thread the needle and join the st by going under the two loops as shown, weave in the ends on the wrong side, fasten off. Dab a tiny amount of PVA glue or craft glue to the tips of the ends to finish.

Block the square using headpins by stretching and pinning each corner to a small pillow. In some cases I pinned my piece to the back of my sofa. 🙂 
ASSEMBLY
Using a nose plier, open the split ring,  attached the ring to any corner, connect the split ring with the earrings.

ICE Yarn Atlas (100% acrylic)
2 x 100g ball (130 m) of green (A),  1 x 100 g ball Red (B)
or any bulky size yarn
Size J/6 mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Yarn sewing needle
GAUGE
5 scs = 2 inches
5 rows = 2 inches
when two strands are crocheted together

STITCHES USED
ch = chain    
dc = double crochet           
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
5dc in one = 5 dc in one st
sc4tog = single crochet 2 stitches together
